People are getting scared and angry about Trumps lies about the virus and the country’s status in combating it. From Maddow (via @jayrosen_nyu), re Trump:

I can’t watch Trump’s press conferences. The frustration with their worthlessness is amplified by the danger we’re all in. Today was the first day that the only trusted voice, Dr. Fauci, was not present. People noticed. Why we shouldn’t listen:

To which I’ll add: 7,769 (Johns Hopkins) at 5:00 PM today. Walking backwards with the day counts he gives, the first day is 14 Feb 2020 (ikr) and those values pretty much match what can be found in other sites. The trend is, as expected, exponential:

I have been obsessed with this. The emotions it brings up are confusing and compelling and I still don’t quite know what it’s communicating. It’s mood is just at the edge of recognition. So, I’m doing closer listenings than before and hope to understand it better.

The markets tanked. DJIA dropped almost 13% by end of day. S&P 500 down almost 12%.

Trump told state governors to basically fend for themselves. “Respirators, ventilators, all of the equipment–try getting it yourselves.”
