This is the month where states are starting to open up even as cases and deaths are steady or increasing. Today Kemp–considered the worst governor along with DeSantis of Florida–warned that the cases were increasing in Georgia. He who followed what Trump wanted and was immediately stabbed in the back (“I disagree with him on what he is doing, I think it’s too soon.”).
I realized over the past few weeks I haven’t really tracked the numbers like I did at the start. The following data is taken from The COVID Tracking Project:
My daily/semi-daily walk to break up work can unfortunately just raise my blood pressure. I’m in the minority of people wearing masks and social distancing. Piedmont Park has been crazy, and Cinco de Mayo was no better (we saw a mostly-un-masked crowd filling the patio at Senor Patrons across the street). The best I’ve seen, from what little I go out, is at Home Depot where maybe 90% of the people were wearing masks.
Trump and Pence are regularly showing up at places–even at factories making masks, or with a team of nurses–not wearing masks while Trump’s web site sells MAGA face masks. For Trump, he would lose “face” with his HCQ cult followers if he wore a mask; for Pence, god will keep him healthy even though the virus is running through the Evangelical community. Mitch McConnell is trying to shelter companies from liability for employees’ Coronavirus-related illnesses, as they are forced back to work. Meat packers brace for a resurgence.
The Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature is organizing 100 Days of Decameron. I found out late so will have to jump in in the middle (can’t believe it was over a year ago when I read it).
My love of Cambodian pop will pay off when the new graphic novel about Cambodian singer Ros Serey Sothea’s life is published.
