Analysis of Quadrophenia: Part I, Primary Themes
The Who's Quadrophenia (1973) was their sixth studio album and their second rock opera. Much has been written about the story (see Quadrophenia.net and thewho.net), but little of it covers the musical themes and structure contained in the songs, or how those themes are shared and modified across the songs. I intend this analysis to be a description of the music and a musical map of Quadrophenia as a whole.
Unless necessary, I will avoid aspects of Quadrophenia involving themes that are textual (repeated words or lingo such as "street," "scooter," or "face"), dramatic (isolation, youthful rebellion), or conceptual (symbolic use of water or physical transformations). Although the aesthetics of these are most effective when viewed in combination, it is beyond the scope of the current discussion.
This is a work in progress, and may be updated periodically as I research and write subsequent articles.
Songs
For reference, we'll split the song cycle into two acts. This split is probably an artifact of media limitations, and nothing in the liner notes suggests that a two-act structure was intended. However, Pete Townshend was aware of those limitations and he probably took them into consideration, consciously or not, while he was composing.

Themes
The primary themes listed below each appear in several different songs with slight rearrangements. Sometimes, motives from one theme may appear as an accompaniment figure to another primary theme or to a secondary theme. I've labeled the primary themes with text taken from either the most characteristic lyric that it accompanies, or from the song with which it is most closely associated.
The transcriptions of each theme, although generally true to the recording, are in places a hybrid encompassing each theme's most relevant variations. Combined, they form the condensed ideal of the theme to be referred to further on in the analysis.
All transcriptions are mine. In some instances, I've referred to transcriptions on thewho.net to resolve any uncertainties (generally with 9th or suspended 4th chords, or where the bass was muddled).
